Modern Fairies - Join our Focus Group!
Modern Fairies is a unique collaboration between leading songwriters, musicians, artists, poets, filmmakers & researchers to develop exciting new work, presenting fresh perspectives on what folklore means to us in the modern world.
Focussing on the story-world of British folk-tales about fairies and the supernatural, the Modern Fairies project explores how this material can be remediated to be made relevant to today’s audiences.
Tales about fairies are usually thought of as the province of children, yet the success of works such as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft proves that the mythical past still holds the power to enthral adult audiences. Traditional folk tales speak to contemporary concerns and anxieties.
These can teach lasting truths about romantic relationships, about exotic strangers and homeliness, stability and risk-taking – the obscure becomes relevant, immediate and vivid.
The Focus Groups
As part of the project we are running two focus groups and we’d love you to get involved.
The session will include a talk on the project, discussion of the materials and an opportunity to meet two of the artists/musicians to discuss their work. There will also be a group discussion about your response to the themes of the project with an academic researcher.
The groups take place on Wednesday 16 January (6pm – 8pm) and Thursday 17 January (5.30pm – 7.30pm) in the Artists Dining Space at Sage Gateshead.
All participants will be invited back to attend a follow-on session in April and will have a ticket reserved for them for a performance at Sage Gateshead. No payment is available for participation in the focus groups, but we will provide refreshments. All participants will receive a Modern Fairies poster signed by all available artists, and those attending the focus groups in April will also have a ticket reserved for them for the relevant performance. No prior knowledge of the artists, the project or the work is required, though we would encourage all participants to visit modernfairies.co.uk to find out more.
If you’d like to take part in either group (or if you have any questions) please email Steven Hadley at firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and contact details. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis.
